The 2017/18 AfriSam-SAIA Awards held in Cape Town in late October recognised Colletif Saga’s Silindokuhle Preschool as a winner in the Sustainable Social Programmes category. Working with the Joe Slovo community, the French architecture firm gathered sustainable and recyclable materials from around the city and reused them to ‘create a new story based on a collective effort’.

Another winner in the same category was James Delaney and Thulani Nkomo’s the Wilds, a 16 ha public space in Johannesburg that has been revitalised and transformed into an inner-city park.

Garnering top honours in the Sustainable Architecture category were House Burnett Prinsloo in the Western Cape (Robert de Jager); mixed-use development Fulham Heights in Gauteng (Local Studio); the Richards Bay IDZ entrance gate in KwaZulu-Natal (Jeremy Steere and Sphelele Mhlongo) and House Gardiner in Gauteng (Simply Sustainable).
